I read that you learn more from a poor example than from a correct one. I don't believe this but that means my site will be a success.

You play the left or right wing. You always try to stay on that side of the puck.

Your partner is the wing back on your side.

For spacing and area diagrams, see Forwards in the 3-3.

Offense

With the puck

  • Score first. If you can’t score, draw defenders so a teammate has a shot.
  • Swim straight or outward on your side (45° or more). Don’t cross the formation.
  • Pass short to the center forward — if you need more than about six feet, hold the puck.
  • You can lay the puck back to your wing back.
  • On your wall: swim up the wall or pass to the center forward.
  • If you lose the puck, send it back toward the wall or to the center forward.

Without the puck

  • Surface toward the direction of play.
  • After passing to the center forward, surface ahead of them on your side.
  • After leaving the puck for your wing back, surface in front of that back.
  • If you lose the puck backward, surface backward to stay in the play.

Supporting a teammate

  • Wing back behind you: stay 2–3 feet wider on your side. On the wall, get on the wall directly in front of them.
  • Wing back in front of you: get back in front of them.
  • Center forward with the puck: be ready on your side, about 5–6 feet away and 1–2 feet ahead of the puck.

Defense

  • Hold the outside. Don’t get beat wide.
  • Chase from your side when the puck is lost in front of you.
  • Can’t get the puck? Force it to the center forward or your wing back.
  • Funnel opposing forwards to the center forward.
  • Don’t let play go down your wall.
  • Puck on the wall: get between the opponent and the wall, force play to the center forward.
  • Puck behind you: cut off back passes, break up their stack, backpick from your side. If you win the puck, move to your side to start offense.

Quick reference

  • Stay on your side. Don’t cross the formation.
  • Score first, pass second. Short passes only.
  • Chase when the puck is lost. Don’t give up the outside.
